It has been many years since I saw a movie that I became lost in, hanging on the next moment, praying for the characters, biting my nails, gasping and squealing with their burdens and victories.
All the Light We Cannot See, a limited series now streaming on Netflix is just such a work. Shawn Levy’s adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s epic novel is nothing less than brilliant. His passion for the story shows in every aspect of this work, from the actors playing the roles to the beautifully staged sets and accuracy of many horrors endured during the Nazi occupation across Europe during World War II.
If you take the time to watch this lovingly crafted story on Netflix, be sure to watch the special features segments as well, for they give some background into the actors and how they got their roles. Levy chose actors who were actually blind bringing a level of authenticity that is palpable.
The story of Marie-Laure and her persevering family and how it intersects with another hopeful, light seeking young man is captivating, heartbreaking and truly poignant. Now I want to read the book. These are the stories that captured my heart in high school. Merely assignments for many of my friends, I became engrossed in the stories of Anne Frank, Elie Wiesel, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Hemingway and so many others. Stories that are so well written you can smell the smoking bombs, feel the heat of the city burning, hear the crunch beneath the boots of the soldiers, and hold your breath as you turn each page. Escape From Warsaw by Ian Serraillier was one that really stuck with me.
There is something uniquely special about a biography or book based in fact that is written as a narrative rather than just a personal account of events or feelings. When we can be inside the mind of the enemy, the hero, and the background characters, we gain a true perspective of the magnitude of these world altering events.
If you haven’t seen the series, I highly recommend it. Now, I am off to buy the book. It will be a different kind of immersion, but this novel is a classic and one I want in my collection.
Wishing you all the beauty of a life lived within all the Light we cannot see. Thank you to everyone involved in the making of this series and especially to Mark Ruffalo. I will follow your impassioned project trail anywhere.

I saw the series on Netflix, and I’ve had the book a few years for historical information. Read parts of it. Now I want to read the entire book. The author Anthony Doerr, was Winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Reviewing the end chapters, the story continues and years have passed by. No spoilers. The book is well worth your time to read. 📚🎶 Christine

I watched it and you are right, it is excellent. I found it incredibly disturbing but I think it needed to be. The acting was exceptional. I’m so glad you suggested I watch it.

I agree on all points, Pam. The unrelenting voice of ego and chaos is undeniable; but I, for one, keep my heart focused on the hope we find in the Light. Humanity is on a slippery slope towards failure after so many positive steps forward. That’s why I wrote my book. It’s my vision for a world where humans understand that the real struggle lies within and only by balancing those conflicting energies will their world see the Light beyond the hand of darkness. I just bought the Kindle edition of his book and will begin reading it. Thanks for stopping by! 🤗❤️

That’s too bad. They have the best series in my humble opinion. I’m sure it will be on Youtube eventually.

I am not much on series on TV. I never seem to have the patience (or attention span) to keep up with them.

Lately I haven’t been keen on getting involved in ongoing series due to cancellation issues. But the limited ones are like four hour movies with completion at the end. Like the old mini series genre.
